General Westmoreland was born in March 26, 1914. He was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. In 1947, he married a woman named Katherine Stevens Van Deusen. At the moment he is leading our country in South Vietnam. He believes that if we do not win this war, our country could fall into communism and that is that last thing our country wants.
Reflecting on the Tet Offensive
General Westmoreland has strong views on the Vietnam War. General Westmoreland is a supporter of the war. He thinks that if we do not fight back in the war we can not defeat communism in our country. When asked about the Tet Offensive he said that, the US was prepared for it and that “the American public were caught by surprise”. After the Tet Offensive and Westmoreland said that “the American people were not prepared for that, and I assume some significant responsibility for that”. He knew that he made a mistake and said that “If I would have to do it over again, I would have made known the forthcoming Tet Offensive. At that time, I didn't want the enemy to know that I knew what was going to happen. I did know. I made a mistake in not making that known to the American public”.

General Westmoreland is the leader of all of the United States in South Vietnam. He made up all the battle plans. He has 190,00 men fighting for him. These men are fighting under his ideas and views on the war and communism. "North Vietnam is paying a tremendous price with nothing to show for it in return. The war is not a stalemate. We are winning, slowly but steadily." Westmoreland wants more troops, no matter how many troops you give him he wont he happy. He wants as many troops as he can get to win this war.
